An IT project manager oversees the schedules of an IT project, which is usually initiated by a CIO or technology executives. An IT project manager is a person who manages the schedules of an information technology project. This person is called an IT or information technology project manager. IT projects are usually dictated by a CIO (Chief Information Officer) or by technology executives in a company. With the expansion of new technologies comes the need to update and improve systems and this is where the project manager comes into play.

C-level executives are always interested in launching new projects to achieve their corporate goals. In many circumstances, this would lead to the evolution of an IT project. An IT project can involve many people, technologies and span many months and perhaps years. Having a solid IT project manager is often the key to the success of these initiatives. The project manager will be able to track objectives, measure results, ask tough questions, and finally deliver the project on time and on budget.

The day-to-day activities of an IT project manager can vary greatly depending on the project phase. During the beginning of the project, the project manager can meet with key stakeholders to help identify what the main objectives are. During analysis and design, the project manager can help the team gather requirements and brainstorm technical solutions to the problem at hand.

One of the biggest challenges the project manager has is keeping the team under control. This can be particularly challenging with a large team and a project that spans many months. Any good project manager will always have checkpoints or gates with the customer. Sometimes the customer may be internal, other times it may be another company altogether.

If the project manager is able to navigate the dark abyss of schedule conflicts, the next big challenge is actually meeting the deadlines and objectives agreed with the client. This is often very difficult on a larger project, but easier with a scaled-down team. The IT project manager will typically have weekly status meetings with immediate staff and monthly status reports to the CIO or other directors who are sponsoring the project.

Being a successful IT project manager is a multifaceted job that is often less about technical aptitude and more about subtlety and leadership ability. Obviously, an individual cannot be a project manager without understanding the specific technology they are working with. When a person is able to develop technical aptitude, he can become a successful IT project manager.
