What’s the role of prototype developers?

Prototype developers create tangible representations of intangible concepts, using technical and creative skills. They work on projects for clients, providing functional views for evaluation and correction before mass production.

In general, the prototype development process is one that involves implementing concepts that can be initiated by the prototype developer or a customer, taking it from the point of mere idea to a tangible object that can serve as a representation of the concept. As such, prototype developers are simply people who work from an idea, concept, or vision to create a physical representation of an intangible object, something that takes a lot of technical skill and creativity to achieve. Prototype developers may be freelancers, in which case they will be hired individually by clients to develop concepts, or they could be hired by a larger company to work with a group of other prototype developers to take instructions from various clients and carry out those assignments. Basically, the work of prototype developers is one that is done in increments, starting from the time the work is started until it is finished.

One of the first tasks prototype developers perform is to obtain information about a project that a customer wants to build or that the prototype developer has started and wants to build. The design could be very simple, such as a new design or shape for a body lotion bottle, or it could be a complex mechanical design. Either way, the developer’s job is to provide the client with a functional view of the project, something the client can relate to, and a platform for evaluating the project’s attributes, in terms of profitability and potential success. It also allows design owners to make any sort of corrections to the design that may be needed before it is marked up for mass production.

The prototype professional must possess the necessary technical and creative skills that allow the person to grasp the basis of a project in order to build a faithful or accurate representation of it. For example, if a customer has a design for a new type of blender that they want to bring to market as part of a product upgrade, this customer will hire a prototype developer to build the proposed blender based on the design. This view will allow the company to actually see what the blender will look like after production, so that it can make the necessary corrections before the product is fully introduced to the market.
