The wine industry began in Iran around 6000 BC and has grown due to demand for wine for pleasure and religious purposes. Climate affects the taste of wine, and European wines are classified by region while non-European wines are classified by grape. The industry has expanded globally, offering wines of various qualities and prices. Ultimately, wine choice is a personal preference.

Winemaking, which began thousands of years ago in Iran around 6000 BC, was the forerunner of what is now known as the wine industry. The industry was created as the demand for wine grew and spread. The growth of the wine industry has been facilitated by the fact that wine is consumed not only for pleasure but also as part of religious services and rituals.

While the wine industry is profitable, it is ultimately an industry controlled by time and the forces of nature. When the climate in wine-producing regions is favourable, popular varieties are produced unhindered. When the weather is inclement, however, the taste of the wine that will be produced will be largely affected, in turn affecting the wine industry.

Originally, the industry was dominated by vineyards in Europe. These vineyards had been around for many generations and were considered sacred. The wine produced anywhere but in these select vineyards was frowned upon. Now the wine industry is thriving, growing and expanding all over the world. Prized wines come from places like Australia, Chile and the United States, to name a few.

Wines, at least those of European heritage, are classified largely by their region of origin. Those wines that are not from Europe are not classified by their region, but instead by the combination of grapes used to make them. This makes it easier to understand what type of aromas will be present during a tasting.

Furthermore, the wines are classified according to their quality. For example, a table wine is considered the lowest quality of wine. It is not a sparkling wine and has an alcohol content of 14 percent by volume. Conversely, higher value wines are known as quality wines. These wines have a wide range of alcohol content.

The wine industry is one that now encompasses many regions, where it was once limited to Europe. The wines produced and sold in the area range from the cheapest, which can be found in a box or with a screw cap, to the deeply expensive. Whichever type of wine you choose, regardless of price or classification or wine industry standards, is purely a personal choice.
