The Abominable Snowman, also known as the yeti or Bigfoot, is a creature with large feet and a gorilla-like face. It has been sighted for centuries in the Himalayas and North America, but its existence remains unproven. Cryptozoologists study this elusive creature.

The Abominable Snowman is a creature known around the world by many names. The traditional name of the abominable snowman is metoh-kangmi, which means “snow bear-man”. The term has been used for centuries by the Sherpa people in the Himalayas, but it wasn’t until 1921, when Lieutenant Colonel Charles Howard-Bury came across strange footprints on an Everest expedition, that the name became known to Westerners . The creature is also known as a yeti in Nepal and Tibet, and as a Bigfoot or Sasquatch in the United States and Canada, respectively, although experts say the creature seen on the North American continent is not the same species as the one inhabiting the Himalayas.

The abominable snowman is said to be about eight feet tall, with extremely large feet and a face resembling that of a gorilla. It is also said to have a particularly strong odor, which people have used to identify its presence nearby. Theories indicate that the creature could be our distant cousin, or at least an unknown member of the ape family.

Sightings of the abominable snowman have been recorded since ancient times. Although Lt. Col. Charles Howard-Bury remains the first Westerner to hear of the creature, early accounts of a mysterious ape-like creature are numerous. In 1832, a sighting of such a creature was the central issue of the Journal of the Asian Society of Bengal. While explorer BH Hodgson himself witnessed nothing, his local guides did provide a detailed account of a sighting during their Himalayan climbing trip together. During the 1950s, several expeditions went to Nepal in search of the abominable snowman, with mixed results. While no conclusive physical proof of the creature’s existence has yet been found, large human-like footprints have been identified, and sightings have tripled during the 20th century.

The abominable snowman is one of the most popular species studied by Cryptozoology, a branch of science that studies animals whose existence remains to be proven. While skeptics point to several famous hoaxes as proof the creature doesn’t exist, cryptozoologists argue that just because some people have taken it upon themselves to exploit the story doesn’t mean all accounts should be dismissed.
