Thornybush Game Reserve is a private game reserve located in the Mpumalanga and Limpopo regions of South Africa. It consists of over 27,181 acres (11,000 hectares) of land which is home to many different birds and animals. There are six lodges on the reserve ranging from rustic to luxurious. Services provided include ranger-led game drives in land rover vehicles and extended bush walks with experienced trackers. However, care should be taken before traveling here, as malaria is prevalent in this region.
Most Thornybush Game Reserve guests are there to see the animals. Those that reside at this animal sanctuary include lion, leopard, and buffalo, as well as white rhino, black rhino, and African elephant. There are also more than 250 species of birds, different types of amphibians and fish, as well as many species of trees and plants. These animals can be observed up close on both dusk and dawn guided game drives.
Children under six are not permitted on these excursions due to obvious safety concerns, and participation by those under twelve is discouraged. Bush walks can also be quite dangerous, as they are conducted on foot. Children are not permitted on any of these extended excursions.
In addition to exotic and rare animals, there is much more to see in the nature reserve. Large wooded and open savannahs with several rivers and streams running through them provide a breathtaking backdrop. The game reserve is located in the shadow of the impressive Drakensberg mountains. Near the lodges there are also drinking troughs where it is possible to observe the animals while they drink.
There are five lodges in Thornybush Game Reserve, three of which are quite palatial. The well-appointed Main Lodge is located along the Monwana River. Like all lodges, it has a swimming pool, as well as a well-stocked library. N’Kaya Lodge is on the edge of the woods and Serondella Lodge is near two waterholes and has walkways suspended between the trees.
There are two lodges that are more rustic than the others. Jackelberry Lodge is smaller than the others in Thornybush Game Reserve and offers mountain views. Many different types of birds can be seen near this lodge. Chapungu Lodge is unlike any other lodge. Not only is it decorated in a colonial style, but it is made up of five tent suites.
Although Thornybush Game Reserve is luxurious, it is in an area where malaria is endemic. You must take preventive measures before visiting this area to avoid contracting this deadly disease. It is recommended that all visitors to this area consult a doctor for any necessary vaccinations before traveling to African game reserves.
