What’s Underground Irrigation?

Underground irrigation supplies water to gardens and lawns through buried pipes or tubes. Types include irrigation pipes, drip irrigation, and sprinkler systems. PVC fittings connect the hose to the water source, and timers avoid manual on/off. Drip irrigation delivers water to the roots and can also feed plants with liquid fertilizer. Sprinkler systems use pop-ups in PVC pipes and timers to water lawns at specified intervals.

Underground irrigation is a method that supplies water to gardens and lawns through buried pipes or tubes. The different types of underground irrigation are: irrigation pipe, drip irrigation and sprinkler systems. Depending on the size of the area that needs an irrigation system and the level of expertise required to install it, many people will hire irrigation companies instead of doing the job themselves.

Irrigation pipes are usually made from a flexible type of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). A trench is dug where the pipe will be buried and the pipe is placed into the trench. Flexible tubing is used, so no straight lines are needed. Fittings are attached to pipe sections at scheduled intervals using PVC fittings.

The PVC fittings also connect the hose to the water source and the water is dispensed as needed through the faucets. Most underground irrigation systems also come with a timer that avoids the need to manually turn the water on and off. Pressure valves can also be used to control the amount of water delivered.

Another type of underground irrigation is drip irrigation or drip irrigation. Using a method similar to irrigation pipes, a trench is dug and the drip pipe buried. The drip pipe in underground irrigation is intended to deliver water to the roots of the plant or lawn so that it is buried just above root level. Tiny holes pierce the hose allowing water to be delivered to the plant at a slow and steady rate. This method saves water because it allows the soil and plants to fully absorb the water instead of having runoff when delivered all at once.

Drip irrigation is also used to feed plants. Liquid fertilizer can be added to the water source and delivered to the plants, which is called fertigation. This method also reduces evaporation and erosion by using a slow release plan.
Underground irrigation can also use sprinkler systems. This delivery method can use both irrigation tubes and drip irrigation to achieve the desired results. Most often the sprinkler system method is used for large expanses of lawn or on commercial property sites where above ground sprinkler systems would be inconvenient.

Underground sprinklers or pop-ups are mounted in PVC pipes attached to pipe fittings using a “T” splitter. Timers are set to water your lawn at specified intervals. When it’s time to water, the sprinkler head lifts off the hose and waters. When finished, the sprinkler head falls back into the hose until needed again.
