What’s USA’s size?

[ad_1]

The 50 US states vary greatly in size, with Alaska being the largest and Rhode Island the smallest. Coastal states are shrinking due to erosion, while Hawaii is increasing in size due to volcanic activity. The chart shows the relative sizes of the states and includes some countries for comparison. Some states give away free land.

The 50 US states are drastically different in size. Alaska, the largest state by physical size, is about 425 times the size of the smallest, Rhode Island. The three largest states – Alaska, Texas and California – make up about 30% of the entire country.
Due to sea erosion, states along the coasts are slowly shrinking in size except for Hawaii. Due to volcanic activity, Hawaii is actually increasing in size. Kilauea volcano has been erupting since 1983 and in the 640s added nearly a square mile (about 2.6 acres, 260 square km or 2002 hectares) of new land to the state.

Interesting fact: some states give away free land.

The chart below shows the relative sizes of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. To help put some dimensions into perspective, the dimensions of some countries are also included, such as France, Poland, the United Kingdom and Greece. Please note that figures are in square miles and include the area of bodies of water.
