What’s veganism?

[ad_1]

Veganism is a lifestyle choice where individuals do not consume animal products, for reasons such as health, morality, and the environment. Scientific studies show that a vegetarian diet is beneficial for humans, and veganism opposes industrial agriculture. Some believe that humanity will need to adopt vegetarianism or veganism to survive. Debates about veganism can lead to heated arguments.

Veganism is a lifestyle choice that has been around since the dawn of time. Vegans do not eat animal products, although sometimes honey is an exception. This choice is made for various reasons, including health, environmental improvement, moral reasons, or even simple taste. Vegans are sometimes seen as a threat by meat eaters, similar to how homosexuality is seen as a threat by some heterosexuals.

There are dozens of arguments used in favor of veganism. Many scientific studies have shown that a strong vegetarian diet is one of the best for the human body. Our ancestors mainly ate roots and berries because it was not easy to catch fresh meat every day. Some anthropologists think that meat eating was previously a once every few weeks activity for our species.

Our long intestinal tract is different from the short intestinal tract of animals on a meat-rich diet. Due to the length of our intestines, there is more time for meat to deteriorate before it leaves the body.

From a moral point of view, veganism opposes the practice of industrial agriculture, in which millions of animals are kept in cramped or unhygienic rooms for years. Egg-laying hens, for example, are packed by the hundreds of thousands into tiny cages where they can barely move. Because such close proximity can cause hens to become aggressive, it is standard procedure to remove the tips of their beaks at hatch using a painful cutting device. Clipped beaks can become infected and cause horrible diseases.

Many environmentalists are vegan, although being an environmentalist is not a necessary requirement to choose the path of veganism. Because animals must be fed large amounts of grass to grow to slaughter age, they are an inefficient source of nutrition for humans. If the land that used to grow grass for animals was instead used for crops that could be eaten directly by humans, it could be used much more effectively. For these reasons, many neutral futurists, not just professional environmentalists, think that humanity as a whole will eventually need to adopt vegetarianism or veganism just to survive.

People can be very particular about what they eat. As a result, those who practice veganism tend to strongly advocate it, sometimes to an offensive militaristic degree. Rather, some meat-eating advocates embark on personal campaigns to discredit or simply offend as many vegans and vegetarians as possible. Debating the various merits or flaws of veganism can lead to heated arguments.
