What’s Virtual Machine Networking?

A virtual machine uses a host computer’s hardware to function and can connect to networks through the host’s network adapter. It can also connect to other virtual machines on the same host. Virtual machine networking is not portable but can be cost-effective. Software may be needed to create virtual networks.

A virtual computer is one that exists only as part of another computer, using the other computer’s physical hardware to operate and function. While a virtual machine cannot exist independently of a host computer, it can still perform all the same functions as a “regular” computer. Virtual machine networking is the process of connecting one or more virtual machines to access resources on a local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN).

To establish an effective virtual machine network connection, one option is to give that virtual machine access to the network adapter located inside its host computer. This means providing him with access to your modem or network card. After granting access to the computer’s networking hardware, the virtual machine will be able to connect with all networks that the physical network adapter is authorized to use. If an Internet connection is available on the network adapter, it will provide the virtual computer with working Internet access. If there is no internet access, the VM will only have local access to other computers connected to the same network.

A second option for using virtual machine networking involves selecting no network adapter. In this case, the virtual machine will not have access to external networks, either online or offline. Instead, the virtual machine will be able to connect with other virtual machines on the same host machine using an Internet virtual machine network. This facilitates the transfer of data between virtual machines on the same physical host computer, simplifying the transfer of files and data between virtual machines.

One disadvantage of virtual machine networking is the lack of portability. Virtual machines and networking are tied to a host computer and its hardware, so relocating a virtual machine network in a meaningful way is largely impractical. Therefore, the virtual machine network is only suitable for use on computers that will not be relocated on a regular basis.

Depending on your operating system, you may need some software to use the virtual machine network. In some cases, the software may allow for the creation of an unlimited number of individual virtual networks. With a virtual network, you never need to add additional hardware to add more computers to your network, making large-scale virtual networking more cost-effective than traditional physical networking.
