Voice peering routes audio calls through the internet, bypassing traditional phone networks. It can occur through a private or open network and offers cost savings and high-quality sound.
Voice peering is a process used today to route audio call signals from one point of service to another, using the Internet as the transmission medium. Sometimes referred to as VoIP peering, signal routing bypasses the traditional PSTN telephone network or Public Switching. The end result is a signal that is believed to have a high level of sound quality without generating a high cost to the call originator.
The overall texture of a voice peering process can occur in two ways. First, the signal is routed through a private network. Any service provider connected to the private network can complete the connection with any other service provider also connected to the network, essentially creating what could be called an “on to on” connection over the network. This is known as layer 2 process in voice peering fabric or VPF.
A second means of initiating voice peering is to use an open network. In this scenario, there is a central service provider that manages the routing at both the point of origin and the termination point. The signal does not jump from one carrier to another. This approach is known as a layer 5 process.
There are two benefits of voice peering. First, there’s the cost factor. Using voice peering eliminates the need to incur long distance charges when initiating an audio call outside the local calling area. This means that people living in different parts of the world can communicate freely without worrying about incurring a large telephone bill.
Second, the clarity of sound over a connection made through voice peering is usually of very high quality. This isn’t always true with other audio calling platforms, especially when the signal is routed through a series of switches operated by different carriers. With voice peering, call quality is often so high that participants feel like they are calling across town rather than across the country or to an international location.
