What’s Wire Mesh?

Wire mesh is a metal material with interconnected wires used for various applications. Welded wire mesh is commonly used in concrete construction, while stainless steel mesh is used in transportation systems and food processing plants. Fine mesh is used for filtering in various industries.

Wire mesh is a material made up of several interconnected metal wires, usually steel or aluminum. These strands can be welded together, extruded, or even connected via pins or other devices. The size and permeability of the wire mesh will often dictate its various uses; finer mesh can be used as a colander or for vegetables, while larger, pinned mesh can be used as a conveyor belt in an industrial setting. Sometimes this type of mesh is also used in gardening and landscaping applications.

One of the most commonly used types of mesh is welded wire mesh. This is often used in concrete construction, as the mesh can be laid before the concrete is poured. The concrete can then be poured around the mesh, and once it hardens, the concrete will have greater tensile strength because the mesh contained within will help stabilize the often brittle concrete. This type of mesh is often used in place of steel rebar, which is a series of interconnected steel bars. Mesh tends to be easier to install and lower in cost than rebar for concrete projects.

Transportation systems often use wire mesh to carry goods from one place to another. The individual pieces of the mesh can be intertwined to create a flexible belt, thus allowing the system greater mobility and flexibility. Such belts are usually made from stainless steel, as this material tends to be resistant to water damage and corrosion, and is very durable. Belts made from stainless steel mesh are common in food processing plants and any other warehouse environment that requires the belt to have increased ventilation and the ability to be washed quickly and easily.

Even very fine wire mesh has a wide variety of purposes. This material is porous, which means that liquids can generally pass through it, although solids cannot pass through it. This mesh is therefore often used for filtering. Filters can be used in automobiles and other vehicles, in gardening applications, industrial applications and even in the home. The mesh size will determine what types of materials can be filtered. A large mesh panel, for example, can be used to sift through sand keeping large boulders out, while a smaller mesh panel can be woven so tightly that it prevents certain particles or bacteria from passing through.
