What’s Wood Flour?

Wood flour is a fine powder made from dried and pulverized wood chips, commonly maple or pine. It can be mixed with epoxy resin to create a filler for building projects and is often used for outdoor construction due to its waterproof properties.

When wood chips are dried and then pulverized to a fine powder, the result is known as wood flour. This product is mainly made from maple or pine, but other types of wood are sometimes used as well. Wood flour looks and feels very similar to sawdust, but typically has a much finer texture. It can be combined with an epoxy resin to develop a filler that is useful in a number of building projects.

This flour may not hold up well if it contains a lot of moisture, so the wood must be dried thoroughly before creating this product. In large sawmills, a solar or electric furnace is often used. Workers in smaller operations might simply cover the wood and then let it dry naturally over time. Maple and pine shavings are often dried for this purpose because these two woods are commonly harvested in many areas. Other varieties such as oak or hickory may be used instead, or the flour could contain both maple and pine wood.

After being processed, this pulverized wood can have a texture similar to that of wheat flour. It might look similar to sawdust, but it doesn’t feel rough or grainy. Wood flour might have a light to medium brown color depending on the type of wood used to make it. This product contains a large amount of dust, so workers should wear goggles and a mask whenever working with flour.

Wood flour is typically used by mixing it with a binding agent. Man-made agents called epoxies are often used to turn wood flour into a substance that could be used as a filler. When these two ingredients are mixed together, the result is often a thick, somewhat sticky substance similar to putty. This can be placed onto surfaces using a knife and may sometimes need to be sanded once the mixture is dry.

There are many uses for a mixture of wood flour and resin both indoors and outdoors. This substance can be used to join pieces of wood together when building an outdoor deck or stair railing. It’s also a popular choice for building on boats because it’s somewhat waterproof. When large quantities of wood flour and resin are placed in a mold, these products can also be used to create a toilet seat. Some homeowners also use this mixture to fill holes in doors or sills.
