Runners in Moldova’s 10km run were rewarded with a glass of wine at the finish line in the world’s largest wine cellar, Milestii Mici State Winery. The event aimed to promote Moldova’s wine industry and attract visitors to the country. Moldova is the least visited country in Europe and has a breakaway region, Transnistria.
More experienced runners need little incentive, but the organizers of a 10km run in Moldova in 2019 had a nice way of making sure everyone made it to the finish line. After navigating a mostly underground course with the help of headlamps and maps, the contestants were handed a glass of wine to toast their accomplishment. Naturally, since their run took place in the largest wine cellar in the world – Milestii Mici State Winery – the runners were probably in for a taste. Moldova, a former Soviet Socialist Republic, is hoping to spread interest in its wine industry, and the tender was meant to whet the world’s appetite for its offerings. The runners came from the United States, Europe and Canada, and as they made their way through the wine-stocked limestone caverns, they were greeted by cheering musicians, singers and dancers. The winery is listed by Guinness World Records as the largest on Earth, holding approximately two million bottles of wine.
