A new Gallup poll shows that the world no longer sees the United States as the ultimate power in global leadership, with a tepid 30% approval rating. Germany was seen as the top world leader by 41% of respondents, followed by China at 31%. The world’s perception of US leadership is at its lowest level since the survey began more than 10 years ago.

Since his election, President Donald Trump has pushed an “America First” policy, pulling the United States out of global alliances on trade, environment and defense. And people around the world seem to have had strong reactions to these policies. The results of a new Gallup poll, released in January 2018, indicate that the world no longer sees the United States as the ultimate power in global leadership. The poll, which polled people in 134 countries, gave the US a tepid 30% approval rating, behind Germany and China.

What difference does a year make:

Germany was seen as the top world leader by 41% of respondents, followed by China at 31%. Russia has a 27% approval rating for its global role.
Gallup says the world’s perception of US leadership is at its lowest level since the survey began more than 10 years ago. The poll gave the US an approval rating of 48% during the last year of Barack Obama’s presidency.
In about half of the world’s countries, America’s position has dropped by 10 percentage points or more. Some of the biggest defections: Allies in Western Europe, Australia and Latin America.
