The Crow People, also known as Apsaalooke or Absaroka, are a Native American tribe living on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana. They were first encountered by French explorers in the mid-1700s and are named after the crow. The tribe’s origins are disputed, but they are known for their large tipis and horses, which were important for hunting and warfare. Today, the tribe has around 12,000 members and is found in various locations across America.
The Crow People are a Native American tribe that originally lived in the Yellowstone Valley and along the Yellowstone River. Today, most of the tribe live on the Crow Indian Reservation in southern Montana. The Crow People, also known as the Apsaalooke or Absaroka, number approximately 12,000 members today.
The Crow tribe first came into contact with Europeans in the mid-1700s. During this time, the tribe encountered two French-speaking brothers who were exploring the region from Canada. These explorers are probably responsible for the tribe’s English name; when they returned home, they referred to the tribe as “gens de corbeaux,” which is French for “people of the crow.”
The exact origins of the tribe are disputed. Some believe the ravens came from an area near the Mississippi River, while other historians believe the original members of the tribe came from Winnipeg. What is known for sure is that the tribe split at some point before moving to the Dakotas and then Montana.
Crows built shelters using poles and buffalo skin. Compared to other Native American tribes, the Crow tribe’s tipis were relatively large and included mattresses and seats, along with a fire. Although the tribe built large and elaborate tipis, they were traditionally a nomadic group. Many raven members still use these types when travelling.
The Crow Tribe was known for the large number of horses they had under their control. By the early 20th century, the tribe was estimated to have more than thirty thousand horses. This was more than any other tribe living in the central region of the United States. Horses were important for hunting bison, the traditional food eaten by the Crow people, and for warfare.
Many of the modern crows live in a reserve with more than 2 million acres (about 8,000 square kilometers) of land. The reserve is home to around 7,000 residents, though not all of them belong to the Crow tribe. Tribe members are also found in many other places across America, including Spokane, Washington; Chicago, Illinois; and Denver, Colorado. The tribal headquarters are located in the tribal capital of Crow Agency, Montana, a small town with a population of fewer than 2,000.
