Seniors are those who have reached an advanced age and are eligible for benefits such as discounts and reduced taxes. Medical advances have increased life expectancy, but government programs may face financial difficulties. Elders can be active and productive members of the community and enjoy retirement with good health practices.

Seniors are people who have reached an advanced age considered beyond middle age. The senior citizen designation can begin at several specific levels of advanced age, but the title is rarely enforced before age 50. Also known as seniors, seniors are eligible for various benefits after reaching certain age levels, including senior discounts, reduced taxes on medical care, and special insurance rates.

Numerous medical advances over the past century have significantly increased human life expectancy, creating a huge population of the elderly. For the first time in history, better health practices are enabling older people to enjoy longer and healthier lives. Many of the diseases that plagued the elderly in the past can be effectively prevented or treated today, including heart disease, cancer, bone loss, and many more. Of course, there is still no “cure” for aging, but it is possible for the elderly to remain healthy and mentally astute well into old age.

In some regions, the high concentration of seniors eligible for old-age benefits and pensions has caused financial difficulties for government programs, such as Medicare and Social Security in the United States. To compensate for a longer-living population as well as the high number of claimants, US Social Security is gradually raising the age required to receive retirement benefits from 65 to 67; and there is a good chance of further adjustment at age 69 in a short time.

At the other extreme, many commercial enterprises are willing to offer discounts to senior citizens who are just past middle age. Retail stores and restaurants usually offer a senior discount to people who have reached 50 or 55 years of age. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) actively solicits people to join other seniors starting in their 50s.

One benefit of aging in today’s world is that older adults can be active and productive members of the community. Elders can offer considerable life experience and wisdom that come with age and provide a fascinating connection to the past. Elders can guide young people, visit the sick, or volunteer to help the underprivileged. With attention to preventative health measures, good nutrition, mental stimulation and daily exercise, seniors can truly enjoy retirement and the benefits of old age.
