Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who, despite hobbits’ aversion to adventure, becomes involved in a journey with dwarves and a wizard. He proves invaluable, encountering Gollum and finding the One Ring, which he later gives to his heir Frodo. Bilbo eventually travels to the Gray Havens with Frodo and Gandalf.
Bilbo Baggins is the beloved main character of JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit, and a minor, albeit very important, character in Tolkien’s main work The Lord of the Rings. Bilbo is a hobbit, blessed with a love of food and drink, especially seed cake, who accidentally finds himself involved in an ‘adventure’. The adventures of many hobbits are considered very disrespectful, so Bilbo’s involvement in a journey with Thorin the Dwarf, and his kinsmen, and Gandalf the Grey, a wizard, comes as a surprise to the hobbit, and eventually changes the course of his life. history of Middle Earth in very big and important ways.
The Hobbit is a much shorter and less complicated book designed for children and adults who enjoy humor and adventure. However, parts of the book set up the essential storyline of Rings, and the book remains a “must read” as a prequel to Rings. We first meet Bilbo, who enjoys blowing small smoke rings, when he meets the wizard Gandalf. The two converse and Gandalf, unbeknownst to Bilbo, marks his door with a sign stating that he is interested in a job as a thief or “treasure hunter”.
Gandalf makes this decision in part because of some things Bilbo Baggins says, and because Bilbo is the son of Belladonna Took. Though the Baggins are very respectable, the Tus have a habit of taking on the occasional fling. Despite Bilbo’s protests, Gandalf sees him as right for the job. Convincing Bilbo, and the 13 dwarves of this is another matter, and when the dwarves and Gandalf show up very unexpectedly at Bilbo’s door, for an exhilarating tea which has Bilbo completely dumbfounded and greatly concerned, Bilbo finds the dwarves’ questions about the matter sufficient. his fiery suitability to defend his right to adventure in an attempt to regain the lost treasure beneath the Lonely Mountain, which is protected by the fierce and cunning dragon Smaug.
Like many heroes’ journeys, especially Dante’s Divine Comedy, Bilbo Baggins is 50 when his journey begins. His first burglary attempts are disastrous, but Bilbo soon becomes invaluable to the dwarves, rescuing them from huge spiders, the wood elves, and eventually negotiating a peace treaty between the dwarves and the many armies who have come to claim a part of the treasure, once Smaug is dead. As Gandalf predicted, Bilbo Baggins is just the man (hobbit) for the job and carries out his share of the adventure with great skill and wit.
An extremely important chapter for fans of the Rings is Bilbo’s encounter with the creature Gollum. He finds a ring that Gollum has hidden and discovers that the ring makes him invisible. This ring, as fans of the later book are well aware, is actually the One Ring, a thing of evil created by the dark wizard Sauron. Bilbo conceals the finding of the ring from the company during most of the journey, but finally confesses to having discovered it. The Dwarves do not dispute his right to use it, though Gandalf is deeply suspicious of it.
Finding the Ring of Power is extremely important to Rings, and at the start of this second job, wearing the ring has clearly changed Bilbo in many ways. Also, Bilbo Baggins gave his full name to Gollum when they played a guessing game, and this name was betrayed by Sauron. Bilbo finds himself constantly worrying about the ring, and he hasn’t aged physically. He no longer wants to live in his beloved Shire, but leaves for Rings, finally settling in the elven settlement of Rivendell.
Although Bilbo is reluctant to give up the ring, he does so of his own free will, handing it over to his adopted heir and cousin Frodo Baggins. It will be Frodo who will eventually take it upon himself to attempt to destroy the ring, in order to save the world of Middle-earth from being overtaken by evil. Bilbo Baggins is the only owner of the ring in his history who is able to give up the ring voluntarily, if still slightly reluctantly.
Both Frodo and Bilbo Baggins as bearers of the ring eventually earn the right to travel to the Gray Havens of the Elves, a place of peace and immortality. The last we see of Bilbo in Rings is his exit with Frodo, Gandalf and many of the elves, to this place of final peace and rest.
