Confucius was a Chinese philosopher whose teachings formed the basis of the religion of Confucianism. He emphasized good conduct and believed in five relationships for a stable society. After his death, his teachings were spread by his followers, and his hometown of Qufu became famous. Confucius is known for his sayings and is considered a great teacher rather than a god.

Confucius was a Chinese philosopher born in 551 BC Confucius is a corruption of the name K’ung Fu-tzu. Although K’ung Fu-tzu was the philosopher’s correct name, he has historically been referred to as Confucius in Western countries.

The religion of Confucianism derives its name from Confucius, and is based on his writings. These writings were intended to be advice to the rulers of China in the 6th century BC and were later studied by followers of Confucius. In addition, his followers brought ideas originating from Buddhism and Taoism, as Confucianism spread from China to other Asian countries, including Korea, Japan and Vietnam.

One idea Confucius emphasized was “good conduct.” He thought that if everyone in a society could achieve “beautiful conduct” or what he considered correct behavior, society could become perfect. This involved avoiding all extreme actions and emotions, being considerate of others, respecting family, and worshiping ancestors.

Confucius may not have felt that he founded a religion. He was a philosopher, not a prophet, and he didn’t emphasize spirituality, but rather certain behaviors and being a good citizen. He believed that five relationships form the basis of a stable and happy society. These five relationships include those between ruler and subject, elder brother and younger brother, father and son, husband and wife, and the relationship between two friends.

After his death, Confucius’ nephew and disciples continued to spread his philosophies. Confucius is considered a great teacher rather than a god. He is known for his sayings of him, such as “What you don’t wish for yourself, don’t do it to others” and “Respect yourself and others will respect you”. Rituals that strengthen the five relationships are important for followers of his teachings.

Confucius died in 479 BC His hometown of Qufu became famous after his death, and is now visited by many tourists, as well as Chinese nationals who wish to visit the nearby temples and Confucius’ tomb. It is not clear whether Confucius would have approved of the numerous temples dedicated to him, or if he would have wanted his followers to continue with his teaching, and not make him an object of veneration.
