Doctor Who is a long-running British TV series about a Time Lord named “The Doctor” and their companion who travel through time and space to fight evil. Originally intended for children, it became a cult hit despite laughable special effects. The TARDIS, a police box, is their vehicle. The show returned in 2005 and has spawned spinoffs.

Dr. Who, more accurately spelled Doctor Who, is the name of one of the British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) longest running television series. The main storyline involves a Time Lord known only as “The Doctor” and a usually female companion who travels through time and space to battle evil enemies. While the program was originally conceived specifically as a children’s television show, it is also very popular with adults.

The show first appeared in black and white on November 23, 1963. Since that time, it has gone through many changes and has aired over 700 episodes. Eleven actors have taken on the role of the Doctor over the years. The generation of a new Doctor is called regeneration. The Doctor regenerates his body, conveniently allowing a new actor to take over the role.

The show was originally intended to present an educational view of history for children. The educational theme was soon dropped and science fiction elements quickly took over as the main storyline. The Doctor would fight many villains, such as his enemies, the Daleks and the Cybermen.

Before it became a cult hit, Dr. Who was considered a long-running joke. The special effects used in the early series quickly became dated, making them look ridiculous by modern standards. Comparing the special effects of the time to the effects used in movies today is like comparing two soda cans and a piece of string to a cell phone. The Doctor just needed to run upstairs to escape the terrifying force that was the tin can on wheels, the Daleks.

Even though the special effects were laughable, the show was considered by some to be too shocking for children. Mary Whitehouse, a morals campaigner in the 1970s, made a number of complaints to the BBC. These complaints have only led to an increase in the popularity of the show.

The vehicle used to transport the Doctor and his companions across the universe was known as the TARDIS. It looked like a 1950s London police box. Although from the outside it was the size of a portable toilet, once inside it became very spacious. Although the look of the interior has changed drastically over the years, in its early days it had a white interior and hi-tech chrome feel.
After being on the air for several years, Dr. Who returned in 2005 to great acclaim. The actor who plays The Doctor has already changed several times since the show was picked up, but the ratings remain strong. Dr. Who has a strong cult following in Australia, Canada and America. The show has also spawned several spinoffs, including The Sarah Jane Adventures, which is more specifically aimed at children, and Torchwood, a much more adult program.
