Harry Truman, or Harry S. Truman, was the thirty-third president of the United States. Before becoming president of the United States, Harry Truman served as a vice president under Franklin D. Roosevelt. Upon Roosevelt’s death, Truman assumed the presidency. Truman served two terms in office. During his first term, from 1945 to 1949, he did not have a vice president. In his next term, 1949 to 1953, however, his vice president was Alben W. Barkley.
Harry Truman has faced a number of internal challenges as President of the United States. He has faced economic problems including severe shortages and numerous strikes. Upon his executive orders, the United States military began a process of desegregation. Truman also faced the task of removing thousands of government officials from office for showing sympathy or adherence to the communist movement. Because Truman was opposed to mandatory loyalty oaths for government officials, however, some political groups accused him of being soft on communism, even as he proclaimed Truman’s doctrine for containing communism. There was evident corruption in the Truman administration. Senior White House staff also got involved.
Truman’s presidency has certainly not been quiet. In addition to handling problems at home, he has also seen many important events in foreign affairs. While Harry Truman was in office, America claimed victory over Germany, saw the surrender of Japan, and the end of World War II. Of course, before Japan surrendered, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed. During his tenure, the United Nations was founded, NATO was created, the Korean War began, and the Cold War began. He also developed the Marshall Plan, or European Recovery Programme. Central to this plan was the intention to rebuild post-World War II Europe and to push back communism.
Harry Truman was born on May 8, 1884 in Lamar, Missouri. On June 28, 1919, he married Bess Wallace. The couple had one daughter, Margaret, born February 17, 1924. He died December 26, 1972 in Kansas City, Missouri, aged 88. Truman was known for his folk sayings. Popularizing the sayings, “The dollar stops here” and “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen,” have been attributed to Harry Truman.
