Joe Biden is a long-serving Democratic Senator from Delaware, known for his work on influential committees and advocacy for the middle class. He overcame a childhood stutter and tragedy when his wife and daughter were killed in a car accident. He ran for president twice, but ended his campaigns early. In 2008, he became Barack Obama’s running mate and was praised for his experience and foreign policy expertise.
Joe Biden is a long-term Democratic United States Senator for the state of Delaware, he ran for president in two nominations and for vice president in 2008. The Senator is well known for his long and distinguished service in the United States Senate and he chaired some of its most influential committees, including the Foreign Relations Committee and the Judiciary Committee. Self-described as outspoken and outspoken, and occasionally getting into trouble for speaking “too much of his mind,” he is nonetheless well respected by his Senate colleagues on both sides.
Joe Biden was born Joseph Robinette Biden in 1942 to an Irish Catholic family in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Money was not plentiful, and the family moved to Delaware when Biden was ten. The Senator credits his mother mostly for getting him to work hard in school, and Biden became the first member of his family to receive a college degree.
In addition to degrees in political science and history, Biden continued his education in law school, becoming a lawyer in 1969. Biden’s early life was not always easy. Although he speaks well today, as a child he suffered from a severe stammer, which was a point of great embarrassment and difficulty. With family encouragement, he was able to resolve his stuttering as he got older.
Before graduating from law school, Joe Biden met his first great love, Neilia, and the couple married in 1966. The family had three children, but tragedy struck in 1972, just as Biden had successfully secured a seat in the United States Senate. His wife and daughter were killed in an automobile accident which also seriously injured his two children. Biden was initially determined to give up his seat, but his new colleagues in the Senate convinced him otherwise. This is perhaps the moment Joe Biden first came to national attention since he was sworn in at the hospital where his children were still in hospital.
Another thing that made Joe Biden unique was that as a new single father, he felt he could not uproot his children and move them from Delaware to Washington DC. Instead, he promised to take the train home from DC every night so that he could spend time with his two sons, who were not only recovering from their injuries but also from the grief of losing their mother. Even after his children grew up, Biden continued to come home every night, which for many means that the senator may be a longtime fixture in Washington, but is somewhat removed from the “old guard” of the DC politics. Over time Biden came home every night not only to his children but also to his new wife Jill Tracy Jacobs, whom he married in 1977, and their daughter Ashley, born in 1981.
As a Senator, Joe Biden has worked in a number of ways. He champions the cause of the middle class, promoting legislation aimed at fair health care, fair wages, help with college and the like. He has also authored and co-authored bills that have helped increase street law enforcement or that have worked to reduce domestic violence against women. He is considered a foreign policy expert who has used that expertise to convey US interests abroad.
Biden’s bid for president occurred in 1987 and 2007. Both ended shortly after the primaries began, and the former was marred by an accusation of plagiarism. This allegation deserves some exploration, since Biden was quoting from a truncated speech in which he had previously cited the source of him on numerous occasions. In 2007, Biden’s campaign ended early after a poor performance in the Iowa caucuses. In 2008 Barack Obama named Biden his running mate for the 2008 presidential election. Many people on both sides called Joe Biden an excellent choice for the job, given his experience, intelligence, and foreign affairs expertise.
