Kurt Cobain was an influential musician through his band Nirvana, but committed suicide by gunshot after injecting a lethal dose of heroin. He grew up in Washington and found solace in Seattle’s punk music scene, experimenting with drugs. Nirvana eventually formed with bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl. Cobain married Courtney Love and was critical of the mainstream music industry. Some believe Love killed him, but a memorial service was held after his death.

Kurt Cobain (February 20, 1967 – April 5, 1994) was an American musician who, through his grunge band Nirvana, had a profound impact on rock music in the early 1990s. In the midst of his rock stardom, Cobain committed suicide. Although the fatal wound was a gunshot blast, Cobain injected more than a lethal dose of heroin before shooting.

Kurt Cobain spent the first years of his life in Aberdeen, Washington until his parents divorced when he was eight years old. Like many young children undergoing divorce, the event had a lasting impact on his life. Friends and family members have noted that after the divorce, Kurt has become more private.

Kurt Cobain lived through the confusing and awkward teenage years that many teenagers experience, and eventually sought solace in Seattle’s punk music scene. Early bands that influenced Cobain’s musical style included The Melvins and The Pixies. It is during his teenage years that Kurt Cobain began experimenting with illegal drugs, starting with marijuana and progressing to LSD.

After several successful attempts at forming bands, Cobain eventually teamed up with bassist Krist Novoselic to create the first incarnation of Nirvana. For much of Nirvana’s history, the band sported Chad Channing on drums, until Cobain got mad at Channing and kicked him out. The band eventually chose Dave Grohl, a talented drummer who later became the lead singer and frontman of the band The Foo Fighters.

As Nirvana slowly found success, Cobain began to seriously experiment with heroin use. On February 24, 1992, Kurt Cobain married Courtney Love, fellow musician and lead singer of the rock band Hole. Many Nirvana fans were critical of Love and believed that she was simply using Kurt Cobain as a means to her own degree of stardom. Regardless, Cobain has stated that he is madly in love with Love.

Kurt Cobain was an outspoken critic of the mainstream music industry, both before and after his success with Nirvana. He believed that the major record labels promoted whatever they believed would sell and placed little importance on the quality of the music. This belief, combined with Nirvana’s immense mainstream success, is believed by many to be the primary factor in Cobain’s suicide. In his suicide note, Cobain stated that he no longer liked writing or playing music, and hadn’t liked him for a long time.
Some believe that Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain, even though he was in a heroin rehab facility at the time. Following Cobain’s death, a memorial service was held at Seattle Center that attracted several thousand mourners. During the service, a pre-recorded message showed Courtney Love reading sections of Cobain’s suicide note.
