Milton Trager developed the Trager Approach, a natural healing method, after overcoming a spinal deformity to become a gymnast, dancer, and boxer. He discovered the potential of his technique when he gave his coach a massage and later used it to cure his father’s sciatica. Trager continued to develop and test his approach on people with various conditions, including asthma, polio, and multiple sclerosis. He even helped a friend walk again after four years of paralysis. Trager received his MD in 1955 and co-founded the Trager Institute in 1980 to teach others his approach. Today, it is incorporated into many treatment programs.
Milton Trager, MD, born 1908, is the man credited with discovering and developing the Trager Approach, a natural healing method. Born with a congenital spinal deformity, he is said to have overcome a childhood marred by the disease to return to being athletic and healthy. He so overcame his illnesses that he became a gymnast and dancer, also training to be a boxer in his late teens.
Milton Trager may have become aware of the potential for real, useful technique as a teenager, when he moved to Miami Beach with his family and began training as a boxer under Mickey Martin. After each training session, Martin would give Trager a massage. One day, Trager offered to provide Martin with a personal massage, as the coach looked particularly tired and worn out. It is said that the massage he gave was more than just a massage, it offered relief and invigoration.
Pleased with the results his hands had delivered to his trainer, Milton Trager returned home and performed his massage on his father. Although his father suffered from chronic and painful sciatica that was not relieved with ordinary measures, Trager said he was able to rid his father of sciatica in just two sessions.
Success in treating his father was not the end of this approach for Milton Trager. He has continued to explore his own method, testing it on people with a full range of diseases and conditions. For example, he’s used his own approach to help people with asthma, polio, multiple sclerosis, and more. He has also lent his hands to help people struggling with back pain. It is said that some of the people he has helped have experienced some relief, but others have enjoyed complete freedom from whatever has been afflicting them.
Milton Trager was so successful with his approach that it may have helped a man get out of his wheelchair. His friend had spent four years paralyzed and unable to walk. According to Trager, his approach helped his friend push the wheelchair aside and walk again. Despite his success, Trager did not oppose traditional medicine and in 1955 received his doctorate of medicine (MD) from the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico.
Milton Trager continued to work with clients after receiving his medical degree, but wanted to teach others to execute his approach. Eventually, he helped a woman named Betty Fuller get relief from her neck pain, and she has continued to learn his approach, co-founding the Trager Institute with Dr. Trager in 1980. Today, like-minded individuals Holistic and medical professionals often incorporate the Trager approach into their treatment programs.
