Despite being tortured during her captivity by the Empire, Luke’s rescue attempt puts Princess Leia into a higher gear. In Episodes V and VI, Leia leads the rebellion, even falling in love with Han Solo. An interesting twist occurs in the third film, where Leia and Luke have to save Han from Jabba the Hut. Instead of making Princess Leia the girl who constantly needs saving, Lucas chooses to create a sort of mythical female warrior, a deeply feminist character who easily holds her own against the two male heroes of the Star Wars trilogy. No one questions her equality with Luke and Han, and indeed she is, in many ways, superior to them, because she is higher up the chain of command and has acted like a rebel since before the start of the war. In later novels, not written by Lucas, based on the post-Empire Star Wars world, Leia marries Han and they have sons extraordinarily gifted with the force. Lucas also implies that Princess Leia could become a Jedi because she is Anakin’s daughter. Lucas’s character can be said to have profoundly inspired some modern heroines. She is definitely the progenitor of other popular characters like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Xena Warrior Princess and Trinity from the movie The Matrix, all beautiful women with the ability to drive and be dangerous when needed.
