A study of over 1,000 transcripts from Fox News and MSNBC found that Fox uses the word “hate” five times more frequently than MSNBC, with the phrase “they hate” being used 101 times between January and May. The study also found that Fox’s use of “hate” has steadily increased since 2009, peaking in 2017 during Trump’s presidency. Approximately 39% of Americans tune in to Fox News each week, and the average age of a Fox News viewer in 2018 was 65.
Emotions often run high on cable news networks, and Fox News is certainly no exception. Two college professors examined more than 1,000 transcripts from both Fox and its ideological opposite, MSNBC, and found that the former uses the word “hate” five times more frequently than the latter. Perhaps unsurprisingly, dislike was more common when the network focused on people opposed to then-President Donald Trump.
Robert Mathew Entman of George Washington University and Curd Knüpfer of Freie Universität Berlin said they were surprised by their findings. “We expected to find that both strongly ideological networks were using such words,” they said. “The fox usually matches some words with ‘hate’. Most notable was “they” – as in “they hate”. Fox used this phrase 101 times between January and May. MSNBC only used it five times.”
According to the study, Fox’s use of “hate” has steadily increased since 2009, peaking when Trump took office in 2017.
Focus on the fox:
About the same number of Americans trust Fox News as they distrust it: 43% to 40%.
In an average week, 39% of Americans tune in to Fox News, a virtual link to CNN.
In 2018, the average age of a Fox News viewer was 65.
