Learning occupational first aid is important for both workplace and personal emergencies. Many companies offer free training and it prepares individuals to use first aid kits and perform CPR. Not knowing proper procedures can lead to panic and further injury, so it’s important to learn from a qualified instructor.
You should learn about occupational first aid for many reasons. In other words, there’s no good reason not to learn about first aid from anywhere, including the workplace. Many people fear that learning first aid procedures will be difficult and if the time comes to use them they will not be able to save a life. This is just talk scares, as you will be tested by a qualified instructor who will make sure you master first aid at work or anywhere else before passing you. Also, that fear is illogical, because if you didn’t learn first aid, you definitely wouldn’t have saved a life.
Many companies will offer free training to employees so they know first aid on the job. This may involve a trainer coming to the workplace to teach life-saving techniques or paying for interested employees to take first aid courses on their own time. Either way, learning first aid is the right thing to do.
Knowing what to do in the event of a medical emergency will prepare you in and out of the workplace. It could be the life of a family member or friend that you end up saving rather than that of a colleague. You may never need to use the first aid techniques you learn, but, like having insurance, you’ll be prepared in case of an emergency.
Most workplaces are required by law to have a first aid kit. In learning first aid on the job, you will know how to use the kit correctly. This knowledge can also be used in your home, as you should have a first aid kit there. If you engage in outdoor recreational activities such as camping, fishing, hiking or biking, you should carry at least a small first aid kit. In addition to learning how to use the kit effectively in an emergency, if you take a first aid course, you’ll know how to give cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if someone has stopped breathing and what to do if a person is choking.
If you don’t know proper first aid procedures and the unexpected happens, like a person choking, you may panic trying to think about how to handle the situation. Some people might think of a stomach thrust technique called the Heimlich maneuver that they have seen in movies and try it on the person who is choking. In fact, this is the wrong thing to do because the push can cause further injury to the choking person. Getting coughs or liquids to drink may work more effectively; if these don’t help, then it may be possible to perform the Heimlich maneuver. The thing to understand is that procedures change and if you take up first aid on the job, you will learn the techniques considered to be the safest and most effective.
