Why no clickable links in AOL emails?

Older versions of AOL email do not allow clickable links unless a specific code is used. Newer versions interpret HTML better, but not all users update. Including a separate AOL link is recommended. Upgrading is the easiest option for those using outdated versions.

Many people believe that AOL, or America Online, simply doesn’t allow clickable links at all in their emails. It is true that older versions of AOL prevent these links, called hyperlinks, from being used in emails unless they are used in a specific way, with a specific code. This is why you often see a completely separate link in emails, which is designated for AOL users.

The reason for this is that AOL email messages, especially in older versions of the program, are mostly text. However, even if the posts aren’t fully HTML, anchor tags are required to use the clickable links. Older versions of AOL basically find or filter HTML tags and format them as they would appear in a browser.

Many users simply copy or cut and paste information into their browser and then search for the destination indicated in the link. However, this can be problematic for new computer users or new AOL customers accustomed to clickable links. Those who may not realize it’s necessary, those who haven’t learned how to cut and paste yet, or those who don’t know where to paste the link to proceed may be frustrated. Long links can also break, leaving out the necessary characters.

New versions of AOL email interpret HTML better, allowing for greater versatility for users. However, that doesn’t mean that all clients will update and use the latest versions. Many may still be using 5.0 or an earlier version, which means your links still won’t work properly, even if you’re an AOL member who’s upgraded. Therefore, it’s probably even better to include a separate friendly AOL link if you want clickable links to be available to those who receive email from you.

Bottom line, it’s not necessarily true that AOL doesn’t “allow” clickable links. Most recent versions do indeed. It’s more a matter of older versions of the email program that may still be in use, having issues with formatting. Such versions do not readily accept clickable links in the typical format, so unless or until all users upgrade, the links will not work properly for all users. If you’re using an outdated version of the AOL email program and want to be able to use hyperlinks, the easiest option is to upgrade.
