Wireline Tools: What are they?

[ad_1]

Wireline tools are specialized tools used in oil and gas industries, mining exploration, and other fields to conduct technical procedures in wells. They consist of a linetype with one or more tools connected. Cable lengths and materials vary, and tools are designed to withstand harsh environments. Custom tools can be developed.

Wireline tools are specialized tools used in the oil and gas industries, mining exploration enterprises and other fields to conduct technical procedures in vertical or horizontal wells such as boreholes. A wireline tool typically consists of a linetype to which one or more tools are connected at one end. Such tools can be used in procedures such as drilling, measurement and data logging, object or sample retrieval, maintenance, clearing accumulations of matter in a well, and more.

Cable lengths and cable materials vary greatly to suit a multitude of applications. A large length of metal line may be required to deliver line tools to the places where they are to be used. Metal lines can be made with different types of stainless steels, carbon steels and other alloys. The choice of material for the metal line will typically be made based on cost, as well as technical variables such as corrosion and pitting potential, tensile strength, and other factors.

A rope jack, also known as a cable jack, is used to connect a tool or tool chain to the telephone line. To facilitate movement of the tools and cable through a fluid, a cable stem, sometimes called a dip rod, may be attached to the cable. This has a similar function to a lead weight that is attached to a fishing line to sink a fish hook into the water.

Given the wide variety of tasks that are accomplished with wireline tools, a number of tools are available. Due to the extreme nature of the environments in which these tools are used, the tools included in wireline tools are often designed to withstand excessive heat and pressure for several hours at a time. The length of time they can be used for is typically longer when the environment is less harsh.

There are a variety of tools that are unique to wired lines. Plumbing cans provide a shocking snap to the metal line. This causes the cable or some other obstacle to slacken should it become stuck. An impression block can be used to take an impression of an object, thus allowing it to be measured or possibly identified. It is often used to gather information to help plan further action when an object needs to be retrieved or relocated, or when an obstruction needs to be cleared. Many different types of canisters can be used to pump or vacuum debris and remove it from the shaft to clear blockages or recover material samples. Pulling tools are used to retrieve items such as other tools that have been lost in the auction.

Due to the wide variety and large number of applications in which wireline tools are used, custom tools can be developed to meet a particular need when suitable off-the-shelf products are not available. The design and manufacture of wireline tools, whether custom or off-the-shelf, are governed by a number of industry standards and specifications depending on their application and where they are manufactured.
