To become a certified Spinning instructor, one must follow the guidance of a Spinning instructor, complete self-study, pass an assessment, and participate in continuing education. Certification lasts for two years and requires 14 STAR Points every two years. Gyms may require personal trainer certification as well.

An individual attempting Spinning certification must follow the guidance of the Spinning instructor, complete self-study at home, complete and pass an assessment, and participate in continuing education. Spinning is a specific type of indoor cycling brand. Spinning certification may not be accepted at gyms that use other brands for indoor cycling classes. Gyms may require certified spin instructors to also be certified personal trainers before they can teach.

Spinning certification classes can be found online and are held all over the world. A person who wants to become Spinning certified must register and pay for Spinning Instructor guidance. This is a one-day class, during which participants go through Phase 1 of the Spinning instructor’s manual. During this phase, they will learn how to set up the bikes, how to design a class, and proper techniques for turning. Orientation participants will take two spinning classes taught by spinning instructors. At the end of the orientation, students will receive a certificate confirming their participation.

After completing the orientation, individuals wishing to become Spinning certified will participate in self-paced study to cover Phases 2 and 3 of the Spinning Instructor’s Manual. During this time, students can practice lessons. They can ask their local health clubs if they can teach a team class with a certified Spinning instructor or if they can practice teaching in class for the other instructors. As they work toward Spinning certification, prospective instructors will benefit from Spinning classes from a variety of instructors. This will provide students with real life examples of how spinning classes are taught and how certified spinning instructors handle different situations.

After students have studied and feel prepared, usually after six to 12 months, they will take an assessment. This can be done online or completed in hard copy and mailed. A minimum score of 80% or higher is required. Once a student achieves this score, Spinning certification lasts for two years from the orientation date. Certified spinning instructors will receive their certification cards in the mail.

Spinning Instructors need continuing education to maintain their certified status. For Spinning, Instructors need 14 STAR Points every two years, up to a total of 40 STAR Points. Instructors can earn STAR Points through newsletter quizzes, home study, online courses, continuing education spinning workshops, and other relevant workshops. Non-spinning workshops need to be taught by qualified vendors and can cover topics such as teaching techniques and motivation, bicycle repair, first aid, exercise science and heart rate training.
