Cardboard boxes are one of the most popular packaging materials in the world. Often used for storage, packing or moving, these boxes are made from heavy paper and corrugated cardboard. They are mass-produced by companies all over the world and are used by almost every retailer in the world to ship or store products. They are commonly recycled as storage boxes and can be used for a variety of purposes. They are popular as a place to store trash in a basement or closet; carry a box of favorites when moving; or for a number of other uses.
Made from a paper-based building material, cardboard boxes consist of two heavy paper liners. These liners surrounded a corrugated third sheet by thickness of sturdy, three-ply paper pulp. While they may come in gray or white, the most common color for cardboard boxes is brown. They are usually referred to as “boxes”, but these cardboard containers come in many other different shapes, most commonly rectangular or cylindrical.
The rectangle shaped cardboard box is made with six sides, with a long sheet attached to four flaps at both the top and bottom. The flaps can be folded up or down to build the box. To close the box, the flaps are often taped together with tape. Without tape or heavy staples, a cardboard box can be closed by folding the flaps over each other, so only one can be removed at a time.
Cardboard boxes are the most commonly used packaging material for deliveries and large or bulky mail. They are always taped and, depending on the product, can be lined internally with protective bubble plastic or with small pieces of foam rubber. Many companies will imprint shipping logos or stickers on cardboard boxes. Still others will write directions or labels on the boxes, such as “Thanksgiving decorations” or “Do not cut” or “Fragile.”
Cardboard boxes have many other practical uses as well. Popular in the 1980s with the emergence of rap music, cardboard boxes were, and still are, used for breakdancing. By placing the flattened box on the ground, the dancer was afforded a more danceable platform and protection from bumps in the floor against their clothing or body. Cardboard storage boxes are also commonly seen in auto garages or auto repair shops. They can be a useful tool for picking up oil and other deposits that may be dripping from the bottom of a car.
