Toilet training is challenging for parents, but there are various methods available. These include the naked method, frequency method, positive reinforcement, modeling, and pants training. Parents should choose the method that works best for their child.
Toilet training can be a particularly challenging series of events for parents. While there have been some instances where children have had a natural desire to use the bathroom, most parents need to combine patience and effort when teaching their children this important habit. There are many potty training methods, and while some people claim that there are different methods for potty training than girls, most potty training methods can be applied to boys of both genders. Some of the more common potty training techniques include going naked, the frequency method, positive reinforcement, shaping, and wearing training pants.
The naked method is exactly what it sounds like. Parents allow their baby to go without diapers, underwear or clothes. Parents encourage the child to let him know when he needs to go to the bathroom. Inevitably, this method is very messy and parents need to pay close attention to when their child starts going to the bathroom so they can rush to the potty to teach him how to use it. This method requires a lot of patience and cleaning products.
The theory behind the frequency method is that parents establish a schedule of taking the child to use the bathroom regularly so that he or she learns to associate going to the bathroom with toileting. This method is difficult to use when the child is in daycare or has frequent changes in his day schedule. This method also requires a great deal of patience and commitment, as some proponents of this method suggest taking your child to the bathroom every 30 minutes.
The positive reinforcement method suggests that the easiest way to achieve potty training success is to simply encourage your child to use the toilet and reward them for successful use. For some children, seeing a parent being happy or hearing compliments will be enough. For others, a tangible reward, such as a sticker or candy, will provide enough positive reinforcement to encourage continued success.
The modeling method uses a special doll that gets wet. Parents dress the doll using the same underwear, not diapers, that the baby is wearing. The child helps the doll go to the bathroom and models the behavior of undressing, sitting on the toilet, going to the bathroom and even rewarding the doll and celebrating when he/she uses the potty successfully. Then the parents ask the child if he wants to go potty and they do the same movements that have been modeled with the doll. The theory behind this method is that a combination of modeling and positive reinforcement works best.
The pants training method is also quite simple and is probably the most common of the potty training methods. Parents use training pants that are a hybrid of a diaper and regular underwear. The aim is to help your child transition to using underwear and using the toilet, but without the embarrassment a child feels when they have an accident. Some types of training pants get very cold when they get wet, essentially giving your child an extra signal that they’ve gone to the bathroom and need to remember to use the bathroom to avoid feeling cold and wet.
There are as many methods of potty training as there are parenting styles. Not all methods will work the same for all children, even siblings. Parents should choose the method that works best for them and more importantly for their child.
