What’s retro fashion?

[ad_1]

Retro fashion derives from vintage fashion and can be applied to any era. The mod fashion of the 1960s, hippie fashion of the late 1960s, and rockabilly fashion of the late 1950s are popular retro styles. Authentic vintage clothing is expensive, so some people make the fashions themselves or hire a tailor.

Retro fashion is a style of clothing that is derived from vintage fashion. Although retro is most commonly associated with the “mod” fashions of the 1960s, it can be applied to virtually any era, beginning with the 1940s. Fashion prior to the 1940s is generally referred to as historical clothing. Historically speaking, various aspects of fashion from different eras frequently come back into fashion, but the retro movement tries to capture a whole look, rather than an individual fashion component.

In the early 1960s, the world of music experienced what was called the British Invasion. Along with the music that took the world by storm, this era also ushered in a new type of fashion that came to be known as mod. The women wore miniskirts and patent leather boots, while the men sported tight turtlenecks and jackets. The pants were often made from fabrics with bold stripes and heavy leather belts. It was during this period that flared trousers were also introduced, although they did not flare out like those later to be associated with “hippie” fashions.

The hippie movement was a counterculture that originated in the late 1960s in protest of the Vietnam War, and is probably the most enduring type of retro fashion. Members of the movement adopted a type of dress that combined prairie fashion with elements of East Indian dress. They often wore loose-fitting embroidered shirts made of soft cotton. The shirts were usually worn with flared jeans or full prairie skirts. Fringed suede vests and jackets, along with wide floppy hats were also in style.

Another type of retro fashion is called “rockabilly.” This fashion is derived from the clothing worn in the late 1950s, when rock and roll was the latest musical sensation. Men generally wore blue jeans with skinny legs. During this time, leather motorcycle jackets also became fashionable, probably influenced by movie actor James Dean. Women wore very full skirts called “circle” skirts, along with tight-fitting sweaters and socks.

Wearing retro fashion is a very popular trend, and finding authentic vintage clothing is often difficult. Sometimes these fashion pieces can be found in thrift stores or estate sales, but more often, authentic vintage clothing is usually offered through more expensive specialty stores. Depending on the general condition of the garment, these fashion items can sometimes be very expensive. Some people find it less expensive to make the fashions themselves or hire a tailor to reproduce them.
