Japan surrendered to end World War II after the US dropped atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. A blackout hit the northeastern US and Canada in 2003, and Mattel recalled 18 million toys in 2007. The Social Security Act was passed in 1935, and Steve Martin was born in 1945.

Japan surrendered to the Allies, ending World War II. (1945) The announcement was made five days after the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki and eight days after the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, killing more than 200,000 Japanese citizens.
A blackout hit the entire northeastern United States and Canada. (2003) More than 50 million people lost power for two days in some areas. It was one of the largest blackouts in world history, along with the 2012 blackout in India and the 1999 blackout in Brazil.
The last public execution took place in the United States. (1936) Rainey Bethea, a 27-year-old black man, was publicly hanged for the rape and murder of a 70-year-old white woman in Owensboro, Kentucky.
Timothy McVeigh was sentenced to death for his role in the Oklahoma City bombing. (1997) The jury that convicted McVeigh on 11 federal counts recommended the death penalty on June 13 of that year. The recommendation was accepted by the district court on this day. McVeigh was executed on June 11, 2001.
Mattel recalled 18 million more toys with strong magnets that could detach. (2007) Mattel identified toys as a choking hazard. The recall came directly on the heels of the recall of lead-tainted toys earlier that same year.
The Social Security Act has been passed into law in the United States. (1935) US President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the act into law, creating pension plans and unemployment insurance for US citizens.
A forest fire started in Oregon, eventually destroying 240,000 acres (970 square kilometers) of forest. (1933) Fire started by loggers and not put out until September 5th. It was later considered to be the first in a series of bushfires now called the “Tillamook Burn” that burned between 1933 and 1951.
Japan issued its first patent. (1885) The first patent was granted to Hotta Zuisho for anti-rust paint. Six other patents were also awarded on this day, three of which were for tea makers. For comparison, the first US patent was awarded in 1790.
One of the first music recordings ever made was played at the conference to unveil Thomas Edison’s phonograph. (1888) A recording of Arthur Sullivan’s piece The Lost Chord was played on the newly introduced phonograph.
American actor and comedian Steve Martin was born. (1945) Martin first came to prominence as a stand-up comedian. He is perhaps best known for his comedic roles in films such as The Jerk, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, LA Story and The Pink Panther.
