American jazz musician Louis Armstrong was born. (1901) Armstrong, who also went by the nicknames Satchmo and Pops, was a famous New Orleans jazz trumpeter. His musical style greatly influenced the jazz movement’s focus on solo performance and had a lasting effect on pop music as well.
