Chimney scaffolding: what is it?

Chimney scaffolding is a lightweight aluminum device bolted to a roof to provide a stable platform for workers to clean, inspect, or repair chimneys. It comes in half or full-round configurations and uses wooden planks for support. It is not intended for heavy chimney construction or demolition. A soft, padded collar is available for fragile roofs.

Chimney scaffolding is a device that mounts above the roof of the roof and creates a stable, sturdy area for a worker to stand on while working on a chimney. Typically fabricated from lightweight aluminum tubing, the weight capacity of a typical fireplace scaffold does not provide sufficient support strength to allow a large surplus of materials to be stored or stacked on top of the assembly. Typical use of the chimney scaffold is for cleaning, lining and inspecting a common flue. It comes in two basic configurations: half scaffolding to allow a worker access to the front or back of a chimney, or full-round scaffolding that completely surrounds the chimney.

Unlike conventional scaffolding which uses several sections of scaffolding stacked from the ground up to provide access to higher elevations, chimney scaffolding is bolted to the roof of a house or building to provide flat, level access at the fireplace. Commonly made of a tubular frame, fireplace scaffolding commonly uses wooden planks perched on the scaffold structure to create a bearing surface. The typical scaffold is adjustable to allow it to fit securely over a wide range of roof pitches, materials and styles.

The intended use of the chimney scaffolding is not for the construction or demolition of a chimney. The lightweight design and materials used in the manufacture of the scaffolding do not provide the strength needed to support heavy chimney building materials. The intended use of the specially designed scaffolding is to provide a stable and comfortable place for a worker to stand while clearing the chimney. Other uses for scaffolding units are to provide a working platform when lining or repairing a chimney. A chimney inspection can also be completed from the safe and stable platform provided by the scaffolding.

When used on shingle or other fragile roof structure, chimney scaffolding is available with a soft, padded collar that fits over the top of the roof and at the foot of the scaffold. This protective cover is often used when working on a more vulnerable sheet metal or standing seam steel roof. The common construction design of scaffolding allows it to be carried up to the roof of a building in sections to be assembled or it can be assembled on the ground and then hoisted up to the roof in one piece. In both configurations, the wooden planks used for a supporting surface on the chimney scaffold are typically hoisted onto the roof after the scaffold is in place.
