H1N1 flu symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, sore throat, runny nose, chest pain, body aches, cough, vomiting, and diarrhea. Children may experience difficulty breathing, rash, irritability, and dehydration. Adults may experience shortness of breath, confusion, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, or abdominal pain. The virus is highly contagious and can be prevented through frequent hand washing, isolation, medical treatment, and flu vaccinations.

Some of the more common symptoms of H1N1 flu include fever, fatigue and headache. Also known as swine flu, other symptoms include sore throat, runny nose, chest pain, body aches and cough. For some, symptoms may include vomiting and diarrhea as well.

Anyone can get the flu at any age, but H1N1 flu symptoms are mostly found in children and adults under the age of 65. Depending on a person’s age, however, H1N1 symptoms can manifest in different ways. For example, in children, swine flu symptoms may include difficulty breathing, a rash accompanied by fever, irritability, and skin that appears to have a bluish hue. Children affected by the flu are also likely to stop drinking enough fluids and may experience dehydration. In some, symptoms may subside, and a child may show improvement only to suddenly experience the onset of symptoms again, which may worsen during a second onset.

Symptoms of H1N1 flu in adults are similar, but most do not have a rash or blue skin color. Rather, adults are more likely to experience shortness of breath, confusion, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, chest pain, or pain in the abdomen. These symptoms tend to only last for 24-48 hours before subsiding. Once infected with the virus, however, a person is considered contagious for a full week after H1N1 flu symptoms first appear.

In most cases, the fever usually exceeds 100 degrees Fahrenheit (about 38 degrees Celsius) and is often accompanied by chills. While chest and body pains are common with normal flu symptoms, when experienced as swine flu symptoms, these pains are usually worse. Combined with other H1N1 flu symptoms, most people experience severe discomfort and pain for the duration of this illness.

The symptoms of H1N1 flu can be quite alarming and often require emergency medical attention. Even in times when pandemic flu is not an issue, many will still contract H1N1, as well as other types of flu. As a highly contagious virus, the spread of influenza is greatly hampered by washing hands frequently, isolating people in their homes at the first presentation of influenza, and seeking medical help for influenza treatment when symptoms appear be extreme or persistent. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommend flu vaccinations as an effective way to avoid getting swine flu or other dangerous strains of flu.
