Stravinsky’s The Satis of Spring premiered. (1913) The groundbreaking musical now considered a classic for its depictions of sexuality and dissonant music was not well received – in fact, the audience rioted, fistfights broke out and the police had to be called in to calm things down.
White Christmas has been recorded. (1942) Irving Berlin’s phenomenal Christmas song was recorded by Bing Crosin on this day. It went on to sell more than 100 million copies and has been continuously pressed on record or CD since 1949.
The first Bilderberg conference was held. (1954) The Bilderberg Conference is an annual private invitational event for bankers, businessmen, media moguls, and extremely influential politicians. Conspiracy theorists say participants, known as “Bilderbergers,” heavily influence world events through the decisions they make at the Bilderberg conference. Famous attendees include Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, and Henry Kissinger, among others.
Bonus Marchers Reach Washington DC (1932) Tens of thousands of World War I veterans known as Bonus Marchers reached Washington DC, seeking their promised war service bonuses. Over 20,000 camped out on vacant lots in Washington until legislation was passed to pay them, though some diehards had to be forcibly evicted from the city.
The Empress of Ireland sank. (1914) British passenger liner collided with Norwegian freighter and sank less than 15 minutes later. Over 1,000 people drowned and it is considered one of the worst disasters in maritime history.
Bob Hope turned 100. (2003) Hope has been an incredibly popular and productive performer since his Vaudevillian days and played hundreds of shows for US troops starting in WWII and through the Vietnam War. Over 30 states declared public holidays for Hope’s birthday.
Rhode Island ratified the Constitution. (1790) It was the last of the original 13 colonies to do so, and was admitted as the 13th state shortly thereafter.
President John F. Kennedy is born. (1917) Kennedy achieved near-cult status in the United States and was seen as the leader of a new era in America. His assassination rocked the nation and conspiracy theories still abound as to who actually killed him.
