Motorhome or trailer?

Choosing between a motorhome and a trailer for a vacation can be difficult. Motorhomes are more expensive but can tow other vehicles, while trailers are cheaper and have more living space. Renting both can help make a decision.

Recreational Vehicles (RVs) provide a great way to take vacations with family and friends. Motorhomes and trailers provide all the comforts of being at home, while outside, nature awaits along with the relaxing enjoyment of camping in style. If you’re new to RVs, you may be deciding between a motorhome and a trailer. The following considerations can help you decide which purchase will best suit your needs.

Advantages of a motorhome: One of the biggest advantages of a motorhome is that you can tow a boat or vehicles, which adds to the fun. The family can also ride in the camper on the road, making it easy for the kids to nap, grab a snack, or even use the camper’s bathroom. Like a trailer, a motorhome’s high profile will make it susceptible to gusty or high winds, but because of its added weight it should be somewhat more stable in safe road conditions, all else being equal. A motorhome might also fit more easily in the driveway or backyard, since it’s easier to drive a vehicle in a tight space than it is to maneuver a trailer in a tight space.

Disadvantages of a motorhome: Although motorhomes are easy to drive, some people feel uncomfortable behind the wheel of a vehicle with such a wide profile. Also, when you arrive at your destination in a motorhome, you will have to move your living space to go anywhere, unless you have a vehicle towed for transportation. Motorhomes are also more expensive than trailers and require more mechanical maintenance. A standard auto shop can’t always work out of a motorhome because RVs often require lifts or special equipment to perform certain types of maintenance.

Advantages of a Trailer: Trailers are less expensive than motorhomes of the same length and amenities, making them very attractive to buyers. Trailers are cheaper because the buyer doesn’t have to pay for an engine, which also results in less maintenance. This gives the buyer the option of buying a nicer or bigger trailer for the same amount of money they would spend on a motorhome, or saving a lot of money to spend on that vacation. Trailers also have more living space than motorhomes because there is no need for a cabin area. Finally, once you reach your destination, the tow vehicle can become a means of transportation.

Disadvantages of a Trailer: Towing a trailer can be difficult, especially in high or gusty winds where the trailer can sway. A trailer also requires a strong tow vehicle with a powerful engine, and avoids towing other toys like a boat or ATVs. Also, it is illegal to ride in a trailer while it is being towed. Finally, one might have to rent space to keep a trailer if there isn’t enough off-street space at home. Rental space can cost up to $100 US Dollars (USD) per month or more.

If the answer is still not clear, consider setting aside a couple of weekends to rent a motorhome, then a trailer. You can discover your own reasons for preferring one over the other. The good news is, you’ll win either way, as there’s nothing like camping or cross-country riding in style.
