Port forwarding is the process of opening specific ports in a computer’s firewall to allow information to pass across a network to another computer. To set up port forwarding, access your router’s options menu, click on “Advanced” and then “Ports” or “Port Forwarding.” Enter the IP address of the computer you want to forward information to and the range of ports you want to open. Save the changes and reset all computers on the network.

Port forwarding is the process of opening a series of ports in a computer’s firewall, usually to allow information from a specific program to pass across a network to another specific computer. To set up port forwarding on your computer, you will need to have your network router’s instruction manual handy, as it contains the default password information and login address for the router. Also, you will need to know the IP address of the computer whose information you want to receive through the enumerated ports. Port forwarding usually involves simply going into your router settings and creating rules to tell which ports on which computer you want to forward to.

Open an Internet browser on your computer and enter your router’s IP address in the address bar. This is typically provided on the router itself or in the instruction manual that came with the router; varies by model, but a typical IP address would be something like 192.168.0.1. Once in the browser, press the “Enter” key to load the options menu of your router. At this point you will usually need to enter your username and password for your router.

Once in the router options menu, click on the button for the “Advanced” options. From there, you should see an option for “Ports” or “Port Forwarding.” Again, this can vary by model, so if you’re not sure which option is correct, consult your instruction manual. Once you enter the port forwarding menu, click the button to “Add” a port forwarding rule to your computer. This will give you an options box where you can enter specific information for the ports you wish to forward.

Typically, you’ll be asked to provide the IP address of the computer you want to forward information to and the range of ports you want to open. This will normally be application specific; in other words, port forwarding for Program X will require a different range of open ports than Program Y. If you don’t know the specific range of ports you want to forward for a program, consult the documentation on the program’s web page, which usually contains the exact port numbers you’ll need to open and forward.

Once you’ve entered the information, press the “save” or “log out” button to save the changes you’ve made to your router. At this point, it’s a good idea to reset all computers on the network and re-establish the network connection. Once the computers restart, the specified ports will be forwarded from then on.
