Early signs of pregnancy can vary and a missed period is not always a clear indicator. Other signs include implantation bleeding, tender and swollen breasts, darkening of the areolae, nausea, cravings, fatigue, frequent urination, back pain, headaches, and mood changes. A positive blood or urine test is the best indicator, but it’s important to see a doctor to rule out other health conditions.
Early signs of pregnancy vary a lot, so it may not always be difficult to tell whether or not you’re pregnant based solely on a missed period or a suspicion that you might be. Many women don’t realize they are pregnant at first and may not realize for a while if they have irregular periods or simply don’t keep track of their cycles. The degree to which you notice signs of pregnancy may depend on whether you suspect you are pregnant and what exactly symptoms emerge or are felt to a great extent.
Of course a missed period can mark one of the earliest signs of pregnancy, but again, not all people miss their period. To confuse matters, about six to twelve days after a woman becomes pregnant, she may have something called implantation bleeding. This may feel like an unusually light spell and may be accompanied by some cramping. This symptom may explain why so many women don’t realize they’re pregnant for a couple of months.
Another sign that may accompany the onset of pregnancy is tender and swollen breasts. Again, there are a number of women who would interpret this as a premenstrual sign rather than a sign of pregnancy. A clearer indication may be darkening of the areolae, which is the skin around the nipples. Female genitalia may also appear darker in color than usual.
Other early signs of pregnancy include nausea, although not all women experience morning sickness, cravings for food, or feeling tired or dizzy. Unfortunately these can indicate other things like coming down with the flu, or just plain hungry. Initial cravings for food aren’t that unusual, although women with nausea may find that many foods are actually repulsive, or that some strong-tasting or highly aromatic foods taste or smell different.
Frequent urination can be one of the signs of early pregnancy, but it can also indicate a bladder infection. Some additional signs may include back pain, headaches, and mood changes. Especially in the early stages of a pregnancy you may experience all or none of these symptoms. It’s a good idea to take any early signs of pregnancy you may experience as a potential indication of pregnancy and take at least one home pregnancy test, especially if it’s been about four weeks since your last period. Pregnancy tests are increasingly accurate, and studies show that early prenatal care can have significant benefits for you and your new baby.
If you are unsure, a doctor or clinic can also perform pregnancy tests and may do this with blood tests first. More than any other sign of pregnancy, a positive blood or urine test is the best early indicator. If you seem to be experiencing many of these symptoms and don’t have a positive test, you should consider seeing your doctor to rule out other health conditions.
