The name comes from the American Revolution’s protest against British taxation of tea.

The Tea Party Patriots are members of a political party affiliated with the Tea Party movement in the United States, a political ideology generally aligned with conservatism. In early 2009, the Tea Party Patriots worked locally and nationally to create grassroots movements involving protests and political activism in an effort to draw attention to its core values. Many of the organization’s members are traditionally associated with right-wing politics, but parts of the group claim to be centrist in their positions.

According to the Tea Party Patriots, the group’s mission is to organize citizens in the United States to become more politically active. The primary focus of the policy lies in the Tea Party movement’s overall emphasis on fiscal responsibility, promoting free-market capitalism, and limiting the role of government in the lives of Americans. Much of the public statements made by individuals belonging to the Tea Party Patriots focus on gun rights, overtax claims, and general antigovernment rhetoric, particularly against the Democratic Party.

Protests and political rallies are one of the main goals of the Tea Party Patriots. In addition to the standard demonstrations undertaken by most political groups, there have been many high-profile acts orchestrated by the organization. On September 12, 2009, the party co-sponsored a protest at Freedom Plaza in the United States capital known as March 9/12 in Washington. He was also prominent in mobilizing members to attend town hall meetings for Senators and Congressmen in 2009 in protest of healthcare reform in the United States.

According to the organization itself, there are over 1000 local chapters located across the country. While many of these are grassroots movements, critics point to funding and organizational elements created by national foundations. Notably, the Tea Party Patriots are associated on some level with the conservative nonprofit Freedomworks®, led by former Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey. In 2009, evidence compiled by Rolling Stone® magazine identified nonprofit memos given to those organizing anti-health rallies, despite party denials.

The origin of the name of the Tea Party movement comes from the American Revolution. In 1773, the colonists of Boston, Massachusetts protested the British taxation of tea by boarding the harbor and throwing the tea overboard. It was one of the iconic events that preceded the start of full-scale conflict, prompting generations of protesters to allude to the concept of rebellion. Since the Tea Party Patriots are adamantly opposed to additional taxation in the United States, the group has chosen to refer to the act of resistance.
