Themed weddings: what are they?

Couples are now opting for themed weddings that reflect their interests, such as historical periods, movies, TV shows, sports, country and western, and beach. The theme can be incorporated into invitations, decorations, attire, and even the menu.

Traditionally, the wedding theme has generally been a favorite color scheme, often chosen for a season like spring or fall, or a holiday like Christmas or Valentine’s Day. More recently, new concepts for themed weddings have come into vogue, with couples opting for wedding styles that reflect their hobo’s other interests. These themed weddings can reflect a period in history like the Renaissance or the 1960s, or feature themes from popular movies and television shows. For example, fans of the Harry Potter series can choose to celebrate their wedding with a magical theme, while fans of science fiction could choose a motif from Star Trek. Some other popular concepts for contemporary themed weddings are sports, country and western, and beach.

Sports-loving couples could choose to celebrate their wedding by incorporating the colors of their favorite team and objects related to that sport. Invitations, decorations, flowers and gifts, and wedding party dresses can all be designed to reflect that theme. Invitations to a football wedding might be adorned with footballs and helmets, while invitations to a baseball-themed wedding might feature bats and catcher’s gloves. This theme can be continued at a baseball-themed wedding reception with guests, for example, being served hot dogs and beer while the bride tosses a baseball instead of a bouquet. Other sports popular in themed weddings include horseback riding, fishing, golf, tennis and boating.

Some couples want their wedding day to express their love of country and western music or the country lifestyle. A bride and groom who choose this type of themed wedding can forego the traditional wedding dress and tuxedo for western-style shirts with jeans, cowboy hats, and boots. The bridal party may be similarly dressed, and the wedding may take place in a barn or corral.

A couple who love the water can decide to have a themed wedding with an aquatic or beach motif. This couple can choose to have their barefoot wedding by the sea with the waves rolling at their feet, get married next to their favorite recreational lake, or get married by the captain of a cruise ship at sea. If their budget doesn’t allow for a vacation by the sea, however, they may choose to marry in beachwear and decorate with seashells, fish, boats, and other marine paraphernalia. The bride and groom could wear jewelry with starfish, anchors, dolphins or other sea creatures, and this would also be a perfect wedding party gift.
