Resin coating, also known as powder coating, is made from synthetic materials and comes in three categories: thermosetting, thermoplastic, and radiation-cured powders. It can be applied using a liquid solution or electrostatic spray and comes in a variety of colors and textures. The coating is sealed onto the metal object by heating it.

Resin coating is made from a synthetic material called resin that is ground into a powder before application. Also called powder coating, resin coating can be made from many different materials that are divided into three basic categories: thermosetting powders, thermoplastic powders, and radiation-cured powders. Common materials used in resin coating include polyester, epoxy, and nylon. Powder coating comes in a wide variety of colors and its texture can be matte or glossy.

Thermosetting powders are also called thermosetting coating powders. The types of resin coating material used in thermosetting coating powders include epoxy, acrylic and polyester resin. This powder coating can be sprayed in thin layers, which allows for the delicate applications needed for attractive high-end powder coatings such as those seen on custom automobiles. Epoxy powder coatings are popular for protective flooring applications.

Because thermoplastic powders don’t perform as well when ground into the fine textures needed for the thin layers used for a classy aesthetic appearance, this type of powder coating isn’t usually used when the coating needs to have a smooth appearance. Thermoplastic resin coating is more durable and more expensive than thermosetting resin coating. Materials that can be used for thermoplastic powders include polyester, polyolefin, and nylon.

Generally, resin is defined as a hard substance that melts when heated. An example of a natural resin is the dried tree sap that emerges when the bark is incised. The plastic resin found in milk jugs is an example of a synthetic resin that people use every day.

Resin is a finishing technique often used instead of varnish to protect and decorate the surface of metal objects. To create the resin coating, the resin is ground into a fine powder. The powder is then applied using a liquid solution into which the metal object is dipped to coat it or by gluing the powder onto the metal object using an electrostatic spray.

To attach electrostatic powder to a metal object using an electrical charge, the metal object is connected to a weak electrical source which gives the metal object a positive charge. The resin powder is sprayed from a gun which gives the powder particles a negative charge and the oppositely charged resin particles stick to the metal object. Whether the coating was applied with liquid or spray, after the powder has been applied, the coated object is then heated to seal the coating onto the metal object.
