The rise of single urban dwellers (SPUDs) has led to an increase in demand for housing and entertainment designed for singles. SPUDs may choose a single lifestyle for various reasons, including pursuing a career or a more solitary lifestyle. While living alone can be expensive, SPUDs may have substantial disposable income. The shift towards SPUD-oriented housing and entertainment has reshaped the architecture and landscape of cities worldwide.

SPUD stands for “single urban dwelling”, which means that SPUDs are people who live alone in urban areas. The rise of single men and women around the world has led to a radical increase in singles in cities, because singles tend to congregate in urban areas. As a result, the demand for housing designed for singles is on the rise, with SPUD demographics effectively reshaping the architecture and landscape of cities around the world.

There are a wide variety of reasons to pursue a single lifestyle. In many cases, people simply remain single for longer periods of time after completing their education, choosing to live in urban areas to pursue a career and explore the rich cultural offerings available to city dwellers. In these cases, SPUDs may have intentions of pursuing a serious long-term relationship at some point in the future, possibly moving in with someone else, and possibly having children.

In other cases, people actively choose to be single and live alone because they prefer a more solitary lifestyle. This doesn’t necessarily rule out an assortment of friends; many of these SPUDs have rich friendships with both men and women which may involve traveling together, going out on the town, seeing movies, and so on. Many of these SPUDs are free men, women who choose to live without romantic ties.

Living as a SPUD can get expensive. In urban areas, housing is at a premium and one bedroom houses and apartments tend to be expensive. Many singles choose to live with flatmates to offset the price of accommodation, which unfortunately can drive up the cost of single accommodation even further, as landlords see what kind of rentals they can get from other tenants. However, SPUDs don’t have to spend money on partners or children, so they sometimes end up with substantial disposable income, if they have high-paying jobs.

The demand for SPUD-oriented housing and entertainment has caused a shift in some cities. For example, many new apartment buildings have more single apartments to cater for people who wish to live alone, and some bars and restaurants have nights specifically for singles. The single lifestyle is also much more widely accepted than it once was, with people no longer expected to get married and start families at an early age.
