12V actuators are remote triggering devices that operate on a 12V supply, commonly used in the automotive industry and applications where low voltage devices offer safety and operational benefits. They come in various types of output motion configurations and can deliver significant power. They are used in door openers, engine regulating agents, and even large excavating machines.

A 12 volt actuator is any one of a family of remote triggering devices designed to operate on a 12 volt supply. The supply voltages for these devices are typically direct current (DC), although, in some cases, alternating current (AC) supplies are used. A wide variety of actuator mechanisms and types of output motion are utilized in 12 volt actuators, including linear and rotary outputs from lead screw and ball screw, gear and positive displacement piston mechanisms. These actuators are common standard parts and aftermarket accessories in the automotive industry and in applications where low voltage devices offer safety and operational benefits. Despite their low voltages, 12-volt actuators are capable of delivering significant power.

An actuator is a functioning remote or automatic source of motion. They carry out the work of a human operator in environments where safety problems, distances and space constraints preclude intervention. There is a large variety of different types of general purpose actuators. These include a range of mechanism types, output motion configurations and operating voltages. One of the more common types is the 12V low voltage actuator designed for use with 12 volt power supplies. While most commonly used in situations where DC voltages are used, these devices can be used with both AC and DC power sources.

The mechanisms used in low voltage triggering devices such as the 12V actuator vary widely. Linear types include rack and pinion, screw and ball screw, or air and oil powered piston mechanisms. Rectilinear actuators such as these are used in a wide variety of applications including door, machine and jack regulation. 12-volt rotary actuators include gears and hydraulically operated mechanisms and are typically used as valve and instrument actuators. The low voltage ratings of these devices do not necessarily mean that they are intended for light duty applications only, as they are capable of providing high power ratings, especially the hydraulically actuated positive displacement types.

Due to their voltage rating, 12V actuator designs are often used in the automotive industry. Here they are used as door openers, engine regulating agents or even for function control of large excavating machines. Applications that benefit from or legally require the use of low voltage/low current equipment often also have various models of 12V actuators. These applications include domestic, marine and hazardous environment gate actuators. The aircraft industry is another area where the 12V actuator is used regularly as system and powered control surface actuators.
