Fan coil units consist of a heating or cooling coil and can be used in various capacities. They regulate temperatures and can be controlled by a thermostat or manual switch. They are cost-effective and can be installed in different ways, but can be noisy. There are two types of units: two-pipe and four-pipe, with the latter being more commonly used in larger structures.
The fan coil consists of a cooling or heating coil. These units are typically part of heating and air conditioning systems. The fan coil unit can be used in all types of capacities.
The cooling fan unit is not part of the air conditioning or heating unit itself and no connection to any ductwork is required within a facility. Instead the fan coil is generally a stand alone device installed to regulate the temperatures in its location. Often the device is controlled by a thermostat that tells it when to turn on and off.
There are some units that still work with a manual switch. This requires the user to power it down and off. These types of devices are used for heating and cooling all types of buildings, including residential, commercial and industrial installations.
Fan coil units can be more cost-effective than their air-handling unit counterparts for a variety of reasons. Firstly, they are more economically feasible as they do not need pipes installed to make them operational. They can also be installed in many different ways such as horizontally using a ceiling mount or vertically using a floor mount.
There is one big drawback to this type of drive. Unlike central air and central heating where the fan is located outside the home or workplace and cannot be seen or heard, these units can be noisy because you can hear the fan running. This noise occurs because the unit’s fan shares the same space and is not outside the building.
Fan coil units work in the same sense as larger air conditioning and heating units through the heat transfer process. When heating is needed, hot water travels to a coil where the heat is then collected and pushed into the air. When cooling is needed, the same process occurs but instead of circulating hot water through the coil, cold air is used instead.
There are two main types of units: two-pipe units and four-pipe units. A two-pipe unit has one supply pipe and one return pipe. The former is used to supply the hot or cold water for heat transfer, depending on the use of the fan coil unit.
The fan coil in its four-pipe version has two delivery pipes and two return pipes. This type of unit is the most used, especially in larger structures where the rooms must be heated and/or cooled at the same time. The two inlet pipes allow hot and cold water to enter the unit to enable this process.
