What’s a fiberglass panel?

Fiberglass boards, made from pressed glass fibers, are a lightweight and cost-effective alternative to metal and glass for building materials. They were first developed in the 1930s and are known for being impact-resistant and rust-free. Fiberglass boards are commonly used in sheds, barns, and industrial buildings, as well as for roofing and wall insulation, and can be found in a variety of sizes and colors. They are particularly useful for greenhouses, as they allow sunlight to enter while maintaining a constant temperature.

A fiberglass board is a thin, lightweight board constructed of pressed glass threads known as fiberglass. This is a relatively young technology, having existed in its current form for less than 100 years. In many cases these plates are used as an alternative to metal sheets and traditional glass as wall and roofing materials, for example in greenhouses.

The practice of breaking glass down into thread-like fibers has been around for over a century, but its current, strong and reliable formation was forged in the 1930s and is referred to in industry as fiber-reinforced polymer. The Owens-Corning company was the first to heat glass and roll it out into thin strands. At first, these hair-like fibers were only used for insulation, but later they were heated again and pressed into a fiberglass board.

A fiberglass panel can come in a variety of sizes and colors, but is characterized by its external textures. Most panels have a smooth lacquer-like side and a textured side that better shows the overlapping strands of glass fibers. Many panels are flat, but some, such as building panels, are wavy to create an uneven surface.

Fiberglass board has been a competitor to sheet metal and glass since its introduction into the market. There are four main advantages of fiberglass over other materials. First, fiberglass weighs less than metal or glass, second, it’s more impact resistant than glass, third, it doesn’t rust like metal, and fourth, it tends to cost much less than both competing materials.

Sheds, barns and many industrial buildings use fiberglass board as a key building component. The panels can be fixed laterally to block out bad weather and maintain an even temperature inside the building. One of the most common uses of fiberglass reinforced wallboard is as a roofing material because it provides the same weather protection and insulation as wallboard, but can be available in light or semi-transparent colors. This allows sunlight to enter a building, providing a natural source of heat and light, often reducing utility bills in the process. An excellent example of fiberglass hardware used for this exact purpose would be a greenhouse covered in clear panels to give the plants a constant temperature and abundant light.
