What’s a Fluid Valve?

Fluid valves are used in piping systems to regulate and control the flow of hazardous or pressurized materials. They can be operated manually or electronically and are often used for isolation and maintenance purposes. Gauges and flow meters are commonly used in conjunction with fluid valves for monitoring and regulation.

A fluid valve is a device implemented in any piping system that contains liquid material supported by the power of pressure. Fluid valves in particular are often implemented within a piping system as a means of adding a safety measure to the system. This is especially important where the piping system maintains a significant amount of pressure or where materials passing through the system could be considered hazardous or harmful. Valves used within a piping system are often used as a means of regulation, however, there are many different valve designs implemented for different purposes.

A fluid valve is an operating piece within a piping system. This means that there are moving parts inside the fluid valve that open or close the valve. Allows or prevents material flow through the piping system. Controlling the fluid valve can be as simple as turning a crank which opens and closes the valve, or the valves can be operated electronically from a remote station and open and close automatically. Fluid valves can also have gauges on them that are set to limit the flow of materials through them to a certain pressure or designated amount of flow per period of time.

Added as a method of isolation, there are usually more than a few fluid valves located at designated points within a system. In this way, a detected problem within a system can be narrowed down to location by the use of fluid valves to shut off sections. This is often done to diagnose a blockage or leak within a piping system so that the affected area can be isolated and repaired appropriately. In fact, this isolation technique is one of the most common purposes of fluid valves within pressurized systems, both as a maintenance measure and as a safety precaution in systems that transfer hazardous materials from one point to another.

Whenever a fluid valve is used within a piping system, it is very likely that meters and flow meters will be used in the same system. In many cases, these gauges and meters are used as devices that provide information to the system operator or maintenance technician. They are used whenever a section of the system needs to be isolated or regulated to maintain pressure consistency throughout the system.
