Harvest festivals celebrate the autumn months and the harvest, with dancing, singing, and decorations of fresh fruits and vegetables. They occur at different times worldwide and are family-oriented. Different cultures have their own traditions, such as African yam and wheat harvests, UK church services, US outdoor festivals, and Israeli religious celebrations.

A harvest festival is a celebration of the autumn months and the harvest that often accompanies these months. Also known as fall festivals or fruit festivals, these celebrations typically involve dancing, singing, and decorations that portray a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that are harvested during the fall season. Many countries around the world celebrate some form of harvest festival.

Around the world, there are many different types of festivals used to celebrate harvest time. These festivals do not all occur at the same time, but rather occur at times appropriate to that country’s harvest season. These holidays are almost always accompanied by celebrations that include dancing, singing, crafts, and a variety of games and recreational activities.

Harvest festival activities are generally family oriented and are considered a special time for communities to come together in celebration. Traditionally, such celebrations center around fruits and vegetables that are harvested at that time of year. The colors and objects used to decorate an area where these celebrations are held often resemble those of the collected objects. Some examples of the foods found at a harvest festival are sweet potatoes, cabbage, and a variety of squash. In many cases dried leaves and flowers are also used as decorations.

Most cultures celebrate some sort of harvest festival. For example, in various countries of the African continent, holidays celebrating the yam and the harvest of wheat are traditionally celebrated. At these festivals, dancers can wear tribal clothes and masks, listen to traditional music, and tell stories to celebrate a bountiful harvest.

In the UK, a harvest festival can begin by bringing baskets of fruit and vegetables to a local church where worshipers sing songs of praise for a healthy harvest as they pray for future bountiful harvests. Following these celebrations, a special effort can be made to give the food collected to the less fortunate. Large communal dinners can also be hosted where each member brings a special dish to share with the group while still enjoying a harvest celebration.

A harvest festival in the United States can be presented as an outdoor festival where children’s games are held and attendees are encouraged to dress up in costume. Often, such holidays coincide with the time of Halloween celebrated in the United States. Many Christian churches host harvest festivals as an alternative to Halloween parties, particularly for those who object to celebrating that holiday. Such a festival offers another type of celebration where kids can still dress up and enjoy the fall festivities.
In Israel, a harvest festival may also be called the Feast of Tabernacles, Sukkot or Succoth. A more religious theme is found in these holidays because it is a time when Jews reflect on their ancestral journey out of Egypt. This type of festival usually revolves around prayers of thanksgiving, storytelling, and meals shared with a community of other believers.
