Mobile phones often have limited storage space, but mini SD cards can provide extra storage. They were developed by Toshiba, SanDisk, and Panasonic and are 37% the size of standard SD cards. Mini SD cards are commonly used in mobile devices and have capacities of up to 2GB. They can also be used in other electronic devices and come with an adapter for use in standard SD card slots.

More than ever, mobile phones are capable of taking photos, storing music or recording videos. Often these files can be quite large and quickly fill up the storage space on your device. Many of these electronic devices have areas for memory cards. The most common memory card format for mobile devices is the mini SD card. Though smaller in appearance, the mini SD card is just as capable as its big brother, the SD card.

The development of SD cards was a joint collaboration between three companies: Toshiba, SanDisk and Panasonic. SanDisk is a well-known manufacturer of these cards, and “SD” is sometimes mistakenly thought to stand for SanDisk. It is actually short for Secure Digital. Standard SD cards are about the size of a postage stamp and were the first of this line to be developed. As smaller electronics have become more and more popular, the need for smaller memory cards has grown.

Advances in mobile technology really exploded in the early 21st century and their capabilities continue to expand. The mini SD card was originally designed to meet the needs of this growing need for mobile devices. At 37% the size of an SD card, mini SD is best suited for use in these increasingly compact devices.

Measuring just 20mm by 21.5mm with a thickness of 1.4mm, the mini SD card is at the heart of a trio of size options from memory card manufacturers. Despite its small size, these SD cards are capable of running at speeds equivalent to standard SD cards. Regular mini SD cards have capacities of up to two gigabytes. Larger storage capacities are available in miniSDHC or SD High Capacity.

While mini SD cards were originally designed for mobile devices, their use has spread to other electronic devices such as MP3 players, digital cameras, and handheld computers. Memory card developers kept pushing for smaller cards. There are Micro SD cards available that are nearly half the size of a mini SD card.

Transferring data between electronic devices, such as your phone to computer or camera to printer, is usually easiest with the use of an SD card adapter. Most mini and micro SD cards are sold with an SD adapter that allows them to be inserted into a standard sized SD card slot. This makes tasks like exchanging pictures or music between your computer and portable electronics much more convenient.
